WHAT IS PLANTAR FASCIITIS?
Plantar Fasciitis is inflammation the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue located on the bottom of the foot. It originates from the heel bone, known as the calcaneus, and inserts onto the toes of the foot. Its main purpose is to support the arch of the foot. Repeated strain from one of the following can lead to tiny tears in the ligament, causing swelling, inflammation and pain:
Excessive pronation (or flat feet)
Overly high arches
Walking, standing, or running for prolonged periods of time, especially on hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt
Wearing shoes that don’t fit well, worn out, or lack proper arch support
Overly tight Achilles tendons or calf muscles
If you are suffering from plantar fasciitis, you are most commonly suffering from pain on the bottom of your heel and foot. You probably also feel the most pain when you first wake up in the morning. The pain begins to lessen as you take their first steps getting out of bed, but hurt more and more as the day goes on. HOW CAN Ideal body chiropractic HELP YOU WITH PLANTAR FASCIITIS?
Walking and standing with pain due to plantar fasciitis makes walking from the parking lot to your work an excruciating experience. Your weekend trail running trips becomes a distant memory of the past. The Plantar Fascia is a thick band of tissue that connects the your heel bone to the toes in your foot. Repeated strain to your plantar fascia can make it weak, swollen and irritated and the condition known as plantar fasciitis can occur as a result. There are more than 30 joints and over 100 muscles, ligaments and tendons in the foot alone. The plantar fascia is one soft tissue structure that crosses more than 10 joints of these joints. If any of these joints are out of place, it can put undue stress on the plantar fascia, injuring it as a result. A chiropractic adjustment administered by our doctors to the delicate joints of the foot can properly realign these joints and relieve the stress on the plantar fascia. Also, if one of the 100 muscles, ligaments and tendons in the foot are tight, they can put stress on the plantar fascia. Active Release Technique soft tissue massage can help relieve the tightness in these soft tissue structures and alleviate the stress on the plantar fascia. Plantar fasciitis is most commonly caused by suboptimal lifestyle habits such as improper posture, or movement strategy. Our doctors would be more than happy to perform a movement screening and educate you on what lifestyle changes you can make to get you back on those hiking trails you miss so dearly!
